Vinyl Thoughts Toy Show

There was a nice little line snaking away from the building by the time I arrived at the Vinyl Thoughts Toy Show that took place on September 15th at The Quixotic World in Deep Ellum. I had heard about the show through my friend John Gonzales (recently featured here aka Diablo Texas) who had some pieces in the show. I thought it would be a fun break from your typical art show and it was one night only so I had to check it out.

My friend James Garrett and I got through the line pretty quick and as soon as we were in the door were given FREE TOYS! OH BOY!
While I like the vinyl art toys I am by no means knowledgeable about them so luckily my friend James was there to explain it to me. The free toys are called DUNNIES, put out by the company KID ROBOT and these were the limited edition AZTECA line which features some characters some of you might know: Frida Kahlo, Cantinflas, La Virgen , Mariachis (oh I wanted one of those!) and some Aztec warriors and gods. My toy was a XOLOTL-Aztec god of lightning. I get the feeling he is a bad dude.

For no reason at all my friend James and I decided we were going to paint on these free toys- much in the spirit of the vinyl toy show and make them look like each other.
The event was PACKED with people milling around displays of toys that were set up in tiers around the room. The event featured all local artists who had modified the toys into one of a kind unique little art toys. So many toys, all one of a kind, hand painted by local artists, modified, sewn, detailed and customized till it no longer resembled the blank form it used to be. It was great seeing everyones diverse approach to the art form. There were even a few toys done in wood and fake fur.

I saw a lot of people walking around with shopping bags and a lot of SOLD stickers on the toys, you had to snatch the one you wanted quick- these were one of a kind and one night only. There were some pop up shops selling “blanks” (toys you can paint on yourself) and with the DJ, all the people, free toys and auctions going on it was a really fun event I hope to see happen in Dallas again!

I still have to paint my Dunny to look like my friend James Garrett but I’ve included his Vinyl Thoughts inspired art toy of ME in the photos below…he was inspired by a silly photo of me wearing a Halloween mask I made and the painted records I make. It’s fun to turn an art experience into your very own- next time you go to an art show see if you can’t experiment with something you’ve seen there. You might just find a fun new hobby!

Nice article.

There was a lot of cool pieces at the show along with a nice vibe. It was clear that Dallas loves custom toys.
