Changing Gears

It’s a very weird sensation to find yourself doing what you love to do and also finding that your rent is getting paid. It feels a lot like a dream and you have to keep pinching yourself. Last year I felt like I was just getting by with my creative projects and barely making ends meet…like being in NEUTRAL…you’re keeping the car running but you’re not going anywhere quickly. This year feels like I can finally shift into DRIVE and get where I’m going. Last year I proved to myself that I could survive on my creative talents and wits without a 9-5 job and that is an amazing feeling.

This year I’m in full freelance mode with blogging, graphic designing and contract mural painting. I’ve been asked to design some album art for musicians and also to collaborate with some other artists on projects this year. I feel wanted where I am which proves that is exactly where I need to be. Right here. I remember all too well being locked into a 9-5 job and my spirit literally crying that I was spending my time hauling boxes back and forth and putting little price tags on things when I should have been painting anything I could get my hands on. I fell for the trap of thinking I was only useful as a cog in someone elses big machine when in fact I wasn’t a part that even belonged on the machine. I am my own machine and I needed my time back to live.
I write this blog to motivate you. Not to quit your job per se…you could be doing exactly what you need to be doing right now.  Sometimes you have to bite the bullet, suck it up and do the dirty work in order to learn, save and plan. It is all part of the package.
But I write this to remind you, is there something you haven’t been doing that you’ve always wanted to? Is it a dream? Something you keep pushing aside? Did you know you could be doing exactly what you like if you put your focus and time into it? Changing your mind and changing gears is a wonderful thing, seems hard and scary but once you do it you are on your way….where you need to be.
The year has just begun, give some thought to your passions and listen to your heart!
